For gear-heads living in Southern California, the new 2009 Nissan GT-R has lost some of its significance. Initially the R35 GTR was often associated with the words “waitlist”, “deposit”, and “markup”; but only nine months after its July 7th release it seems that many of the R35’s 2,500 first year copies made its way onto the streets of Southern California.
While still a legendary machine that conquered Nürburgring in 7:29, the R35 is now associated with Porsche’s accusations, transmission failures, and warranty issues. For those aware of such issues, being able to return to a time when the Nissan GTR was still called a Skyline is a dream come true. For John Oshima of Las Vegas, NV; this dream becomes a reality every time he finds himself behind the wheel of his 2000GT-EX.
The 1977 Nissan Skyline 2000GT-EX dubbed the GC210 was produced from 1977 to 1981 in Tochigi, Japan after Nissan dropped the GT-R line (only to return with the introduction of the R32). While not the turbocharged all-wheel drive monster that comes to mind with the name Skyline, this GC210 still proves itself formidable with a L28 engine bored out to produce 2.9 liters of displacement. After 32 years John Oshima’s 1977 Nissan Skyline 2000GT-EX has proven itself tough enough for the test of time, rightfully reminding us all of the Skyline’s “Godzilla” alias.
